Frequently Asked Questions

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression as a therapeutic tool. It combines traditional talk therapy with art-making activities like drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. You don't need any artistic skill or experience—the focus is on the process of creating, not the final product. Art therapy can help you explore emotions, reduce anxiety, process trauma, and gain insights that may be difficult to access through words alone.

Do I need art skills for art therapy?

No artistic skill or experience is required for art therapy. Art therapy is about the process of creating, not about making beautiful artwork. The materials and techniques are accessible to everyone, regardless of artistic background. Your therapist will guide you through the process and meet you where you are.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact. During EMDR, you focus on a distressing memory while following bilateral stimulation, typically side-to-side eye movements. This process helps your brain reprocess the memory so it no longer triggers the same intense emotional response. EMDR is effective for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, grief, and phobias.

How much do therapy sessions cost?

At Circle & Stone, a 55-minute session is $150 and an 85-minute session is $220. Please contact us to discuss payment options.

Do you accept insurance?

Circle & Stone is an out-of-network provider. We do not bill insurance directly, but we're happy to provide superbills (detailed receipts) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to understand your out-of-network mental health benefits.

What should I expect in my first session?

Your first session is an intake assessment where we get to know each other. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, your history, and your goals for treatment. This session helps us determine if we're a good fit and begin forming a treatment plan together. There's no pressure to dive deep right away—we move at your pace.

How often should I attend therapy?

Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish a strong therapeutic relationship. As you progress, we may adjust to biweekly or monthly sessions. The frequency depends on your individual needs, goals, and circumstances—we'll work together to find what's right for you.

Who do you work with?

Circle & Stone specializes in working with adults. We do not provide therapy for children or adolescents. Our practice focuses on supporting adults navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and those seeking personal growth through art therapy, counseling, and EMDR.
